The rules on winter tires and snow chains differ between the Nordic countries. To make it easy to compare, we have produced a clear table showing what applies in each country.
| Country | Winter tires | Snow chains |
|---|---|---|
| Sweden | Mandatory for heavy vehicles 10 Nov - 10 Apr (regardless of road conditions). | No general requirement to carry. May be used when necessary (proposal for winter requirement discussed but not decided). |
| Norway | Mandatory winter tires for heavy vehicles during the winter season. | Mandatory to carry snow chains for vehicles >3.5 tons 15 Oct - 31 Mar, regardless of road conditions. |
| Finland | Mandatory winter tires 1 Nov - Easter Monday. | No requirement to carry snow chains at all times. Allowed if necessary. |
| Denmark | Winter or all-season tires with snowflake symbol are required for winter road conditions (snow, ice, slush). | No requirement to carry snow chains. Allowed if necessary. |
| Iceland | Mandatory winter tires during the winter (period varies depending on road conditions, often 1 Nov - 15 Apr). | Snow chains are allowed and sometimes necessary in mountain areas, but not a general requirement to always carry. |
