Rules for winter tires and snow chains in the Nordics

The rules on winter tires and snow chains differ between the Nordic countries. To make it easy to compare, we have produced a clear table showing what applies in each country.

DenmarkWinter or all-season tires with snowflake symbol are required for winter road conditions (snow, ice, slush).No requirement to carry snow chains. Allowed if necessary.
IcelandMandatory winter tires during the winter (period varies depending on road conditions, often 1 Nov - 15 Apr).Snow chains are allowed and sometimes necessary in mountain areas, but not a general requirement to always carry.
