Truly locally produced

Truly locally produced

It is a raw and chilly December day when we step into the warmth of our neighbor, Volvo Truck Center in Alingsås. The daylight is barely noticeable even though it is just after lunchtime. Yet the atmosphere is anything but gray. Here stands the result of a genuine local collaboration—a new truck that will soon be put into operation at Alingsås municipality's waste facilities.

The need has grown over time

The waste facilities in Alingsås, Bälinge, and Sollebrunn realized that they needed their own facility vehicle to handle transport, container changes, and emptying more efficiently.

Previously, the municipality relied heavily on a privately owned company for these tasks. This worked well, but with several facilities—and Sollebrunn only open a few days a week—it became clear that having its own loader would provide both increased flexibility and smoother operations. Quite simply, more control under its own management.

The initiative is backed by Alingsås Municipality, represented by Cecilia Fennick and Rickard Pennings, among others. Rickard will also be the one driving the truck during his shifts.

Procurement and requirements specification

As a municipal operation, purchases are always made through procurement, and the work began with a carefully prepared specification of requirements. The municipality's technical services department, which had previously procured a similar loader, contributed valuable experience. The specification of requirements was based on both previous procurements and clear technical requirements, as well as high environmental standards.

Proximity was an important criterion. Construction, servicing, and future repairs would not take place far from the business. This was a matter of environmental considerations, accessibility, and local benefits.

When the procurement process was complete, it was clear that Volvo had won the deal.

Clear proof that the concept works:
Made in Sweden!

A local construction project – for real

The result was a truck with clear local roots in every aspect. The chassis was built at Volvo Trucks in Tuve, the load changer was supplied by JOAB in Gothenburg, and sales were handled by Volvo Truck Center in Alingsås. John Brännerud was the sales representative responsible for coordinating the order according to the municipality's specifications. Volvo Truck Center will also be responsible for future servicing and any repairs.

We at Alf Pettersson AB have contributed to the overall design by manufacturing the toolboxes that are mounted on the vehicle. On the side of the frame is an AP Box Premium – in this version a 1200 mm long toolbox – equipped with inserts for smart and secure storage and a Storage frame for smaller equipment. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with two AP Bogie drawer, mounted between the fenders, which make efficient use of the storage space.

All boxes are designed, drawn, and manufactured in Alingsås, at Alf Pettersson AB—literally next door to Volvo Truck Center. High quality, solid craftsmanship, and local production meet a truck built for everyday municipal use.

Locally in each link

A truck sold and ordered in Alingsås, manufactured and built in Gothenburg, with toolboxes from Alingsås. Future service and operation in Alingsås – and owned by the municipality of Alingsås. This is locally produced in its most concrete form: local jobs, shorter transport distances, and a solution built for the needs of this particular location.

Clear proof that the concept works:

Trailer Trucking Festival at Mantorp

What fun! Thank you all who visited us at the Trailer Trucking Festival on August 22-23, 2025.

During the fair, visitors could touch, feel, and try out everything on display! We had "Rudtorps City's pride and joy" at our stand, with everything mounted on it (read more below), and we also had storage cabinets with drawers, shelves, boxes, and "tool walls."

We also had our AP Box Integration front drawer, which is "hidden" behind the side skirt of the car and can be easily pulled straight out. The drawer has sliding storage and, of course, practical "tool walls" for hanging tools, load straps, and other "good-to-have-close-at-hand gadgets."

In addition to the above, we had a rack with a selection of our Bogie, which provide easy storage between the rear fenders of the car. Available as open storage or with door, as drawer even as a fire extinguisher box. Just take your pick...

On the next rack, we presented our new tool holder A10079. Simple and convenient storage for spikes, shovels, scoops, and brushes. Whatever suits your business. The spike holder naturally has safety stops at the front and rear.

Under the tool holder, you could see our new tarpaulin box, for example A10066 in polished stainless steel at a really good price. (Like everything else. 😉)

And of course we also had our best-selling AP Box toolbox as a complement to our other products.

Width marking and warning signs, e.g. A10061 attracted a lot of interest as these signs meet all the new requirements from the Swedish Transport Agency.

Our experienced staff were on hand at our stand to answer questions and give you tips that make a difference.

In addition, exciting competitionsandexclusive trade fair offers awaited visitors.

Meet Erik Nilsson - with a passion for both trucks and life on the road

Meet Erik Nilsson - with a passion for both trucks and life on the road

We took the opportunity to meet Erik Nilsson when he was passing through between Kungälv and Jönköping, and turned off at Viaredsmotet in Borås. Over lunch at Bruket, we had a chat about life since he took over the factory-built Volvo after the Elmia fair last year.

The transformation
Back then, a well-polished white Volvo rolled out of the exhibition grounds - today it is barely recognizable. Still spotless, but now painted with a portrait of Sitting Bull on the passenger side and Erik's daughter on horseback on the driver's side. The rest of the car is painted in blue and red - the company's colors - with the logo neatly placed on the skirts. How did it come to this?

- I had the idea of Sitting Bull for a long time. On my last car it was Clint Eastwood,
and I felt that Sitting Bull could probably be the next one, but that it then became "chick" on the other side was not really the idea - but it happened. I realized it there and then," says Erik.

A car with a history - and a future
The choice of color is no coincidence. Red and blue have been the haulier's colors since the start in 1937. Erik has been driving for Wiking Lantz Åkeri since the turn of the millennium and he really enjoys the job.
- It's not exactly a seven-to-four job. You have to be flexible and have an understanding family. "But they're used to it. And my wife is traveling a lot, so we have to give and take and adapt to each other's work."

The car was actually bought quite spontaneously during Elmia, something Erik attributes to his colleague and boss Martin:
- "He probably made more or less a spontaneous purchase during the fair, when we saw the car with all the equipment. And then he probably got a good fair offer. It turned out really well in the end."

Erik Nilsson

A day that is never the same
What is your working day like? - "It never quite turns out the way you expect. Like yesterday when I finished the day's work, and got a call to pick up an asphalt paver, but it turned out to be too wide. I ended up screwing it on for three hours and after some help lifting all the stuff into place, I was able to get it in."

But that doesn't bother him - quite the opposite.

- "I love screwing! That's what makes this job fun. You get to be both a driver and a mechanic."

It is this combination that Erik enjoys and which is fun. What he can't do himself, he enlists the help of his friend Tobbe: "He's indispensable when it comes to electricity and hydraulics. He's worth his weight in gold." The same goes for Volvo at home: "I have a few people there who you can call and who are always willing to help."

Fertilizer, snow and snow groomers
A large part of Erik's job is to transport fertilizer to farmers in Dalsland and at home in Värmland.

You have to be flexible and keep your cool, because you have to adapt to the season, the weather, the wind and other people's work schedules.
- "If it rains, you have to change your schedule - but no worse than that".

In addition to truck driving, Erik clears snow in the winter and drives a snow groomer in Frystabacken. "Snow grooming is fun, when you see all the kids on the slopes - how much fun they have. At the beginning of the season they spend all their free time on the slopes. It's really fun."

And as if work wasn't enough, there's a horse and some forest to look after at home.

- "Then I get to move around a bit more, so my body gets tired too - for real," says Erik with a laugh.

Thank you!
Many thanks, Erik, for taking the time - and for letting us see the pride of "Rudstorp City".

Practical products on Erik's car

Erik's car is equipped with many practical and exciting products that you might not think of when you first see it.

ApTur M Cabinet Behind Cab
Behind the cab is an ApTur M - a Cabinet Behind Cab with good storage on either side of the hydraulic tank, which is hidden behind a cover plate in the middle. In the standing cabinets, Erik has hanging storage of air and electrical couplings for different needs depending on the trailer. The coupling plate, which is easy to adapt to the driver's needs, is located at the top of the cabinet. Then Erik has made a special solution for one of his own trailers, so he has added couplings on top of the cabinet.

ApCat Catwalk
To make it easy to work with the trailer connections, there is a climbing handle on the cabinet, and there is good work lighting on the top of the cabinet. The vehicle is also equipped with an aluminum ApCat Catwalk with gull-wing opening, for easy refueling and access to storage. At the rear of the chassis is a frame end behind the turntable, to give the car a neat overall impression. The walkway and frame end are painted in the company's blue color.

Lightbar
At the top of the cab there is a lightbar with additional work lights, flashing lights, reversing camera and tail lights.

Integration box
Behind the car's side skirts hides an AP Integration box.
- "That's where I keep tools and everything you need when you're out and about. It can be a bit of a hassle sometimes when you have to get stuff, so some oil and tools are good to have with you."

Mudguard wedge
Mudguard wedge with cover between fender. Then you can easily change the screen tops.
- "Right now I have the everyday screens on the car because many trailers 'eat screens'. I have the real screen tops with me to Mantorp."

Decorative strips Arne
The stainless steel decorative strips are recessed in the notches of the fender tops, to give an extra top finish to the car.

Lamp box
At the back of the vehicle we have Super Premium lamp boxes.

Wide load sign
At the front of the cab there is a wide load sign that complies with the Swedish Transport Agency's latest regulations on all points.

With the customer in focus - Alf Pettersson AB's path to the future

With the customer in focus, our ambition is to be the market's best supplier of products and solutions for trucks and mobile applications.

The start of the year has involved a lot of external reviews of our business, where everything from customers, trade unions and the Swedish Work Environment Authority to our recurring quality and management review have given us consistent praise and good reviews.

We therefore want to ask some questions and see what our CEO Jan-Krister Johansson thinks about it.

Strong results through hard work
Getting good ratings in external reviews is no coincidence. It is the result of determined work and a corporate culture characterized by commitment and continuous improvement.

- We see this as proof that our work on processes and working methods has produced results. And of course we are proud and happy about all the good reviews," says Jan-Krister Johansson.

So what has been the key to success? According to Jan-Krister, it's about the entire organization being involved in the improvement work and everyone working towards common goals.

- We want to be a company you can trust, at the forefront of the market," he says.

By constantly keeping an open mind to improvements and investing in both staff and technology, the company ensures that it not only meets today's demands but also equips itself for the future. Every detail of the business, from product development to customer service, is part of our common machinery that drives Alf Pettersson AB forward.

says Jan-Krister.

To keep quality at its best, Alf Pettersson AB works closely with its customers and suppliers. Feedback from all parts of the chain allows the company to quickly identify opportunities for improvement and implement measures that make a difference. This is an important part of the company's philosophy - to be constantly responsive and adaptable to deliver the best possible results.

Creating a good corporate culture is also a key factor. Transparency and inclusiveness are keywords that make employees feel engaged and motivated.

- I hope that everyone here feels that they know what's going on, understand why and really want to contribute," says Jan-Krister.

Internal communication plays a crucial role in this. Regular meetings, feedback systems and an open dialog between management and employees create a work environment where everyone feels included and important to the company's success.
